Oppo I really want to get a wagon or wagonesque (see HHR SS) as my next vehicle. Has to have LSD or can be equipped with one from the aftermarket for a reasonable price.

Preferably I also want to stay around $10k but will go up to $12k so definitely looking in the used market. Also I’ll be financing so it can’t be something super ancient. I’m open to all suggestions so post away.

E91 for your time:

Legacy/Outback (both available in Turbo forms).

Volvo V70.

BMW 3 Series

Audi A4.

Those are the ones I’m going to put a half-assed amount of time into thinking of.

It’s old, but it’s just a suggestion. I know this one doesn’t have a manual, but be patient and you’d find a really nice one for about the same price.

You’ll have to contact them to have them lift the car and see if it has an LSD.

Has to have LSD

I wouldn’t go near one of those things. It’s about that time where they’re going to start costing a lot of money to keep running. The battery is over $600 for an E90, FYI.

I love how we both suggested E30 Tourings. Both somewhat overpriced, I might add.

This is the second time today I’ve recommended an e39. The 540 wagons with the manual can be a bit tough to find, but they’re around. Pretty common to swap in the LSD from the M5.

Kinja'd!!!

As I told another dude earlier today, it’s absolutely insane that you can get a car as good as the e39 540 for as cheap as they are right now.

Hell yeah dude. I was looking for a BMW for a buddy for a couple months ago, and there were 2 or 3 MT e39 540 Tourings that had me pricing out aluminum sheds and analyzing the plausibility of squeezing one more car onto my property (I’m at 7 at the moment).

Typically speaking BMW wagon owners love their cars and take great care of it. I used to work at a BMW dealership and the batteries ARE NOT that expensive. Maybe it’ll cost around $200.

A Forester XT Sports would be killer. You can most definitely find an amazing Subaru whatever XT for 10-12 grand.

Finding one with a stick though could be a whole different story. They are borderline unicorns.

Yeah man. You don't see many of them, but as previously alluded to, 2 or 3 of them popped up on SoCal Craigs in about a 2 month period awhile back. The wants were very strong.

I don’t know if the ones I saw were your typical dumbass SoCal Bimmer owners or not, but I was shocked at how cheap they were. I don’t remember exactly, but well under 10 grand. Fuck man. Thinking back on it hurts. Like 6 months worth of agonizing over a new DD had just ended with the purchase of a CTS V-Sport. If I’d only held out a little longer, I would definitely have scooped up one of those e39s.

Volvo v50 or v70. Subaru legacy are hard to find buy out there. The e91 is the ultimate imo but prices are still high and my preferred combo rwd 6mt with sport package is very hard to find. If you're ok with awd and non sport package the e91 6mt can be found

I’ve come to realize that about the E91. Would definitely prefer RWD but it seems AWD is the only way to go in my budget. Question is then why choose that over a Legacy? I’ll have to further research it. Why concerning fact for the BMW is that $500-$600 battery replacement. That’s far too steep for my liking.

I think the sticks are relatively findable because of places like Northern CA and Boulder CO. Anyway, here’s my auto- one day it will be a stick. We bought it as a baby machine, so both of us had to be able to drive it.

Subaru are far from reliable as far as Japanese automakers go but still better than German. As far as awd I just trust subaru and audi so much more than I would bmw. Have you looked for b7 a4 6mt avant? There are a good number out there too

Here are a few cars that may fit the bill. I'm not sure I could recommend any of them unless you are somewhat able to repair it yourself because you could spend the entry fee twice over on some of these cars if things go wrong. One car I would recommend is the e39 wagon below, those are pretty bulletproof especially with the 6 cylinder.

You could probably get about the nicest E46 wagon in existence for around 15k, lots of choices under 10k and many in stick. I got my ‘03 last summer well under 10k and it’s in great shape. The black one was mine and had ~200k, I sold it just after getting the blue one.

Kinja'd!!!

There’s also this, at a local shop where I’ve gotten a few cars. Prices are a bit high but they fix every imaginable thing on their cars before selling them. You can either pay a little more up front or wait for stuff to break later.
